Cooperative Bank: Introduction
Cooperative Bank, the official name of which is The Co-operative Bank plc, appears to be a Manchester-based retail and commercial bank. The bank is well-known for its policy of being an “ethical bank,” which means that the bank does not invest in the companies, associated with the use of sweatshop labour, animal testing, genetic engineering, fossil fuel extraction, and arms trade.
The bank originated in Manchester back in 1872 as the Loan and Deposit Department of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, but was turned into the CWS Bank just 4 years after that. Cooperative Bank gradually developed over the years, while its major expansion leap took place after the 1970s. In 1975, the bank became the first member of the Committee of London Clearing Banks for 40 years, and this allowed Cooperative Bank to issue its own checks.
Nowadays, Cooperative Bank appears to be a subsidiary of The Co-operative Bank Holdings Ltd. In 2013-2014, the bank was a subject of a rescue plan, which helped it to solve the issue of a £1.9 billion shortfall. As of the present time, the key products of Cooperative Bank include treasury, retail banking, project finance, mortgage loans, loans, credit cards, commercial banking, and asset management.
