Lake Michigan Credit Union: Introduction

So, Lake Michigan Credit Union, which is oftentimes labelled as simply LMCU, appears to be a local American credit union. Currently, this credit union has 53 branches in the states of Michigan and Florida, where it serves its customers. At the present time, LMCU tends to be the largest credit union in Michigan and one of the largest financial institutions in this state in general.

As a matter of fact, the history of this credit union dates back to as early as 1933, when it was established in Grand Rapids, Michigan by Lloyd F. Hutt. At that time, LMCU was named as Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union. In 2002, however, the name of this credit union was changed to the presently known name – Lake Michigan Credit Union.

In 2010, LMCU and Citizens Credit Union (based in Kalamazoo) completed a merger, which was quite successful in a result. In 2015, there were plans of merger between the Lake Michigan Credit Union and United Federal Credit Union, but the unions dropped this idea in 2016.

In order to become a member of this credit union, you should make a donation of $5 to the ALS Foundation. In addition to that, the membership is open (for free) to the following applicants:

  • Individuals who live, work or worship in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan
  • Individuals who live or worship in the counties of Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Monroe, Palm Beach, Polk, or Sarasota (all Florida)
