MBNA (MNBA America Bank): Introduction

MBNA Corporation was a bank holding company, which focused on serving predominantly British customers. The history of MBNA bank can be traced back to 1982 when it was founded by a group of executives from MNC Financial, a Baltimore-based regional bank holding company. At that time, the company was also known as Maryland Bank, N.A.

In 1991, this company spun off from Maryland National and became a separate company. During the next decade, this bank holding company grew quite quickly, which allowed it to transform into one of the world’s largest credit card issuers. In particular, MBNA was known about as a company that had specialized in affinity cards.

In 2006, however, Bank of America acquired MBNA America Bank, N.A., and this bank holding company became a subsidiary of Bank of America. In 2016, however, Lloyds Bank purchased MBNA from Bank of America for the record sum of £1.9 billion.
