Yorkshire Bank: Introduction
Yorkshire Bank is a Leeds-based British bank that operates as a trading division of Clydesdale Bank. It was established back in 1859 by Colonel Edward Akroyd from Halifax. At that time, the bank was opened as West Riding Penny Savings Bank. At first, the bank functioned as a provident society, but later it was opted to become a savings bank.
In 1860, there was taken a decision to extend the bank’s operations into other ridings of Yorkshire. Thus, it was decided to rename the bank into Yorkshire Penny Bank. In 1990, the bank was acquired by the National Australia Bank Group, which had shares in other British banks as well. The bank still remains a subsidiary of CYBG plc, a parent company of Clydesdale Bank as well. Yorkshire Bank tends to continue operating mostly in northern England – most prominently in Yorkshire.
